Welcome back wonderful families! I hope you had a relaxing and fun-filled Thanksgiving Break! This week we began our Fractions Unit! It is a nice break from all of the problem solving we have been doing! I really like the Fractions Unit because it is a lot more hands-on.

Students have been doing well with the new format for Centers. They seem to really enjoy having more choices when deciding which activities to complete in order to earn a Tic-Tac-Toe. Center Work is still due on Mondays in order to avoid points of for late work. Here is the menu for next week:

Here is what I have planned for next week's lessons:

MONDAY: Students will work on generating equivalent fractions. They will connect models they use to find equivalent fractions to multiplication. They will learn to use multiplication to generate equivalent fractions and to determine if two fractions are equivalent. Students do not learn how to multiply a fractions by a fraction until 5th Grade, so we will instead multiply the numerator and the denominator by the same number. When multiplying the numerator and the denominator by the same number, it equals 1, so the value of the fraction doesn't change. Here is extra practice with equivalent fractions.

TUESDAY: Students will continue to work with equivalent fractions.

WEDNESDAY: Students will work today on Finding a Common Denominator. Here are the steps we will be using:

THURSDAY: Students will work on writing a fraction as an equivalent fraction in simplest form. Students will simplify fractions by dividing the numerator and the denominator by the same number. Here are the notes and strategies we will use for simplifying fractions.

FRIDAY: Review day... students will review the strategies and skills we learned this week.

I think that is it for now! Let me know if you have any questions or concerns.

BLESSINGS,

Mrs. Burke
