I wanted to take the time to make you aware that your child will be starting Literature Circles in place of their nightly reading log assignment. A Lit Circle consists of 3-5 students who share their experiences about the same chapter book as they read it. They will work together to reach predetermined goals set by both me and their group.
The Lit Circles have been set up in order for the students to have in-depth and meaningful discussions in class about a variety of literary forms and elements. These include, but are not limited to; theme, author’s purpose, vocabulary, character develop, etc. The Lit Circle group will meet twice a week during reading class (Tuesday and Fridays). Students are expected to have reached the predetermined page and completed their specific jobs and personal goals, prior to the start of the meeting. Literature Circles will take the place of the Reading Log Homework.
The jobs will consist of: Discussion Director, Passage Picker, Summarizer, Word Wizard, Investigator, Spy, and Connector. Your child will keep track of their work in their Lit Circle folder. The folder also details WHEN and WHAT assignments are due. The front page of the wiki will also list due dates.
Please email me with any questions.
